The role of the work is summarised below;

DAILY ROUTINE PRACTICES IN PIGGERY

  1. Every morning check for the activeness of the pigs to be sure they are doing fine?  Most pigs make active noise in the morning as a sign of activeness.
  2. Make sure the water nipples are working and there is abundant water on the farm. Pigs require a lot of drinkable water to aid their digestion so you must make sure it’s well supplied.
  3. Before feeding, clean up their litters and their pen, get rid of all dirt in the feeders and drinkers.
  4. Change the water of the wallow daily and replace with clean, neat and cool water.
  5. Watch the improvement in the pig in terms of body weight, feeding rate and their litters for health purpose.
  6. If there should be a symptom of sickness or in-activeness among the pig, separate the sick animals immediately and report to the manager and contact the VET immediately.
  7. Deworm the pig regularly with drugs, vaccines and appropriate medications should be put in place in order to secure their health.
  8. Disinfect piggery, pig pens at regular intervals to make it germ free and clean enough to accommodate a healthy environment for the animals.
  9. Note; Pigs are sensitive to heat and they can die from heat-stress so their house must be well ventilated.
  10. Keep pigs of the same sex and similar weight / size together, don’t ever keep pigs of opposite sex together except for situation of mating. (Crossing male and female for reproduction).
  11. Make sure while formulating their feed, a good quality fibre is included as this is a very important part of pig feed. All feed should be bagged after preparation.
  12. Record keeping is a very important practice so keep regular documentation and development that goes on in the farm always, the record can vary from pregnancy period, number of litters produced, number of males and female in the farm, number of productive pigs, fatteners, weights and even more.
  13. Farm must not be left unattended.
  14. No external animals allowed on the farm under any circumstances.
  15. Water is only for use on the farm and under no circumstance should anyone be allowed to fetch water on the farm.
  16. Cleanliness: the pen needs to be regularly scrubbed to avoid mould developing
  17. Feed must be weighed per feeding regime before given to pigs
  18. Regular and timely feedback to manager in case of any issues
  19. Any other duties as requested by the manager.
